The Beginning

The founder of BMW, Karl Friedrich Rapp, set up Rapp-Motorenwerke on April 29, 1913, using a factory building near Munich where bicycles were originally made, to manufacture engines for aviation.

Later, his partners took over the engine plant and renamed it Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH in 1917. On August 13, 1918, BMW was converted into a publicly traded stock corporation (BMW AG), establishing the company's subsequent growth. In 1922, BMW merged with BFW and became the BMW we know today.

From the sky to the land

At the end of World War I in 1918, the manufacture of aircraft was banned in Germany under the Treaty of Versailles. This dealt a severe blow to the growing German aviation industry and forced BMW to switch to the manufacture of brakes for railroads and to start developing engines for motorcycles as a first step into car building.

In 1920, the M2 B 15 engine designed by Martin Stolle became the first motorcycle engine produced by BMW, and the R32 was the first BMW motorcycle with a shaft drive, from which the shaft drive design became one of the most well-known features of BMW motorcycles, and can still be seen on the factory's R series motorcycles today.
